BRAIN SCIENCE & LITURGY

The Orchard Community | Jenna Perrine

This past Sunday our special guest Jenna Perrine shared an intriguing talk on “Brain Science & Liturgy”, giving us insight into the power of liturgy & its impact on our lives.

LIVING THE LITURGY: CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE

The Practice | John Perrine

Last night marked the second week of our Living the Liturgy series a four-week exploration of the sacred rituals we practice each and every Sunday that shape our daily lives. Every Sunday at The Practice, and in churches all around the world and across history, Christians have worshipped God through a series of sacred rituals more commonly referred to as a liturgy – an order of worship that includes key elements such as the communal reading of scripture, a confession and assurance, the passing of the peace, communion, and a benediction.

In this series, we want to pull back the curtain and look at why practicing these sacred rituals on Sundays is so formative for our daily lives. Last week, Curtis helped us understand the importance of why we read scripture passages out loud from the Bible each week– how in the hearing and in the sharing of God’s great story, we are shaped into God’s people who have a shared language and history. And last night, John Perrine led us into a deeper exploration of Confession & Assurance.

LIVING THE LITURGY: EUCHARIST

The Practice | Brian Zahnd

Brian Zahnd shares why the Eucharist is the central point of our service. This is the first week in a series focused on the core elements of our gatherings.

This week, our kingdom practice is to respond to God’s invitation. In Brian’s teaching, did you sense God inviting you to embrace your work (whatever that may be) as sacred? In the grain and the grape, we learn that all of life is sacred. Or was God inviting you to expand your table? Is there someone with whom God is asking you to share a meal, a coffee, or a conversation?

LIVING THE LITURGY: SCRIPTURE

The Practice | Skye Jethani

Last night, we had the opportunity to be guided by Skye Jethani as we examined the importance of scripture in our gathering and our journey with Jesus. Skye challenged us to see scripture as a window, to allow the parables and miracles of the Gospels to change the way we see the world.

This week, let’s read scripture with this in mind. How does our reading change the way we see the world? However we read, whatever practice of entering the text we employ, let’s ask how the Lord is inviting us to see the world through God’s own eyes?

A NEW LITURGY

Aaron Niequist

A New Liturgy is our attempt to create holy space wherever we find ourselves—a moveable, sonic sanctuary. Each Liturgy is a 25-minute journey of music, prayer, scripture, and space that helps open us to The Almighty in any location, season, community, or emotion. I really need this.

Created by Aaron Niequist and a few friends in his little basement studio, this project has grown into an exciting collaboration with a handful of gifted musicians and artists. And we are passionate about exploring deeper and more diverse ways to honestly engage with God and each other.

Includes the following liturgies.

EVERY MOMENT HOLY

EVERY MOMENT HOLY brings new prayers for the practices and rhythms that form us. These prayers are ways of reminding us that our lives are shot through with sacred purpose even when, especially when, we are too busy or too caught up in our busyness to notice.

The series features two volumes, the first contains prayers for the ordinary events of daily life — liturgies for "Feasting with Friends" or "Laundering" or "The First Hearthfire of the Season." The second volume contains prayers for seasons of dying and grieving -- liturgies such as "A Liturgy for the Scattering of Ashes" or "A Liturgy for the Loss of a Spouse" or "A Liturgy for the Wake of a National Tragedy."

It’s hoped that the liturgies in the Every Moment Holy series will serve as prayers to encourage readers in practicing mindfulness of the constant presence of God and draw them toward greater recognition of the eternal echoes resounding in every moment of our lives.

THE REVISED COMMON LECTIONARY

Vanderbilt Divinity Library

Daily readings expand the range of biblical reading in worship and personal devotion by providing daily citations for the full three-year cycle of the Revised Common Lectionary. These readings complement the Sunday and festival readings: Thursday through Saturday readings help prepare the reader for the Sunday ahead; Monday through Wednesday readings help the reader reflect on and digest what they heard in worship.
